Prenatal Massage Benefits and Why You Need One

A prenatal massage is like a relaxation massage aimed to loosen tense muscles and reducing stress and fatigue. During pregnancy, a woman’s body goes through a lot. In addition to stressors that come with growing a new little human, especially for the first time. Prenatal Massage is both safe and beneficial for the majority of mothers-to-be. You can start of your second trimester, including during the labor stage.

There are some instances when massage may not be appropriate, particularly in a high-risk pregnancy or with certain health conditions (diabetes or morning sickness for example), we always advise checking with your doctor or midwife first. Our trained massage therapists will be happy to speak with you about your individual concerns before and during your appointment.

As you continue to grow your baby your body makes major changes in order to accommodate these changes. A hormone called relaxin is pumped through your body during pregnancy. Relaxin causes all of the joints in your body to loosen which causes temporary structural changes such as the slight broadening of your hip bones to prepare for labor. You are most likely feeling pain in your back, neck and hips from these changes.

What to Expect When Your Come In?

After you dress down to your comfort level, we assist with positioning you comfortably on the table so there are no strains to your ligaments and assure you and your baby feel supported. For the comfort of our Clients, we have you lay on the table as you would in the comfort of your own bed at home. The American Pregnancy Association consider this to be the best position for a pregnant woman during massage is side-lying, and agree with their recommendations (read more on (www.americanpregnancy.org). Tables that provide a hole in which the uterus can fit may apply pressure to the abdomen, or allow the abdomen to dangle, causing uncomfortable stretching of the uterine ligaments. We use several pillows during our session with you. For your safe and your baby, we sanitize and wash everything between sessions with our Clients.

Depending how far along you are in your pregnancy, we generally include several upper and lower body stretching during the service and will apply deeper pressure in the upper body only as needed. Our approach to care is holistic and safety precaution is used to ensure you and your stay healthy and cared for.
